Before I go into details of the subject at hand, I would like to explain the supermarket shopping cart itself. You see, a shopping cart is a cart supplied by a shop, especially supermarkets, to be used by customers inside the shop to transport their merchandise to the checkout counter during shopping. In many cases customers can also use the cart to transport their purchased goods to their vehicles; unfortunately, some carts are designed to prevent them from leaving the shop.

Mind you, most modern shopping carts are made of metal or a combination of metal and plastic. Besides, these carts come in many sizes, with larger ones able to carry a child. However, there are also specialized carts designed for two children, and electric mobility scooters with baskets designed for disabled customers.

With these shopping carts, customers no longer use their hands to carry around all the things they were buying, but could put everything conveniently in the new favorite shopping aid: the shopping cart.

Meanwhile, an alternative to the shopping cart is a small hand-held shopping basket. A customer may prefer a basket for a small amount of merchandise; while small shops, where carts would be impractical, often supply only baskets.

So, how does supermarket shopping carts design affect sales?

Take it or leave it, the design of a shopping cart affects sales in the supermarket to a large extent. Most commonly used and perhaps the most popular design is the "Wheelie Design" wherein the rear wheels are made a bit larger than the front ones. Wheels are often made of plastic or rubber. The other popular design is "The Swiveler" which is often found in the supermarket.

Grip handles are also another important feature of the shopping carts. Handles often come with an ergonomic design with foam or rubber grip for proper handling of the cart. Local Groceries often come up with carts which have handles with plastic grips, but they are not only cheap but also uncomfortable to handle. Below are some design faults that affect the supermarket sales.

1. Jam wheels: This is something that happens frequently with the shopping cart. Shopping carts are usually fitted with wheels, however if any one of the wheel jams, the cart can become difficult to handle. Thereby, discouraging the customer from buying.

2. It houses germs and bacteria: to be honest with you; the design of these shopping carts made them a great recipient of all kinds of germs and bacteria. Studies have shown that it's advisable for shoppers to sanitize the handles and basket areas prior to handling them or filling them with groceries, due to high levels of bacteria that typically live on these shopping carts.  This is due to the carts having a high level of exposure to the skin flora of the previous users.
